Bamboo Fabric vs. Lyocell (TENCEL™) for Weighted Blanket Covers

Choosing Fabric for a Weighted Blanket Cover

When developing a weighted blanket with a removable cover, fabric selection is not only about softness or appearance. The fabric also needs to fit the inner blanket properly, especially around the zipper.

Bamboo-based fabric and Lyocell (Tencel) are both options worth considering.

From a production point of view, I would look at the fabric construction, how it fits around the inner blanket, and how it performs after washing before making a final decision.

1. Bamboo Fabric and TENCEL™: Check the Fabric Construction First

One detail worth clarifying is that fibre type and fabric construction are not the same thing.

Lyocell can be made into woven or knitted fabric. Bamboo-based fibres can also be used in different fabric constructions. This means that Lyocell is not always woven, and bamboo fabric is not always knitted.

The difference matters when making a weighted blanket cover. Woven fabrics generally have less stretch across the fabric structure, while knitted fabrics often have more give.

If you are comparing two cover fabrics, check whether each one is knitted or woven before comparing how it fits.

2. Why Can a Cover Wrinkle Beside the Zipper?

This is one practical detail to check when developing a removable weighted blanket cover.

When a woven fabric has little stretch, the cover dimensions need to match the inner blanket and zipper construction carefully. If the fit is not right, wrinkles may appear along the two sides of the zipper after it is closed. This is normal, because of the tencel fabric characters itself.

A knitted fabric with more stretch may be easier to fit around the inner blanket. But stretch does not automatically mean a smoother finish. The cover size, zipper length, sewing allowance and fabric recovery can all affect the result.

For this reason, I would check the completed cover with the actual weighted inner blanket inside. A flat fabric sample cannot show whether the finished cover will fit neatly once the blanket is in place.

It is good idea to check the samples of finished product, if it is accepted, then go forward with the mass production, based on our experience, most clients accept this, especially when the tencel fabric is digital printing rather than solid colour. If can't accepted, can also change to other fabric material, so can keep risk to the lowest.

3. Shrinkage and Pilling: What Should You Check?

Shrinkage and pilling are important when choosing fabric for a removable cover, particularly if the cover is intended to be washed.

However, neither problem can be predicted reliably from the fibre name alone. Yarn quality, fabric construction, finishing and washing conditions can all make a difference.

Before approving a fabric for bulk production, check its care instructions and, where necessary, test a sample after washing. Pay attention to the overall dimensions, surface appearance and the fabric around the zipper.

These checks are especially useful when the outer cover needs to keep a neat appearance after repeated use and washing.

4. Is Bamboo Fabric or TENCEL™ More Expensive?

There is no fixed answer. TENCEL™ Lyocell fabric is not always more expensive than bamboo-based fabric, and bamboo fabric is not always the cheaper option.

The price depends on the fibre specification, yarn, fabric construction, weight, colour, finishing, order quantity and availability. Based on our experience, normally, under the same conditions and specifications, Tencel price is little higher than bamboo fabric.

For OEM and private label projects, the fabric price is only one part of the decision. The material also needs to work with the cover design and production process.

5. Which Fabric Is Better for Your Weighted Blanket?

There is no single answer for every product.

If the cover has a zipper and a close fit is important, start by checking the fabric's stretch and how it behaves around the zipper.

If you are concerned about shrinkage or pilling, bamboo fabric maybe better idea.

A fabric that looks good on its own may behave differently once it is sewn into a removable cover. Checking the material together with the actual inner blanket is a practical way to make a more informed choice.
