Sourcing Weighted Blankets: What Buyers Should Check

When sourcing a new product from China, many buyers start with the same question:
“What is your best price?”
It is understandable.

Cost matters in every B2B project.

But when it comes to weighted blankets, price is only one part of the sourcing decision.

The product has several components that need to work together, and a small difference in construction can affect the final customer experience.

So before comparing supplier quotations, I would suggest checking a few other things first.

1. Make the specification clear

“Weighted blanket” is not enough information for a useful quotation.

A supplier needs to know what you actually want.
For example:
  • Blanket size
  • Total weight
  • Fabric
  • Filling
  • Pocket construction
  • Colour
  • Removable cover or not
  • Logo
  • Packaging
  • Quantity
Without these details, two suppliers may quote completely different products.

You may think Supplier A is cheaper.

But after checking the specifications, you may find that the two products are not really comparable.

This is one reason why a very low first quotation does not always mean a better sourcing deal.

2. Ask about weight distribution

This is one of the most important technical points in a weighted blanket.

The filling needs to be distributed across the blanket in a controlled way.

The pocket design and quilting construction help keep the filling in place.

As a buyer, you do not necessarily need to understand every production detail.

But you should ask the supplier how the filling is distributed and how they control consistency during production.

If possible, compare samples from different suppliers.
You can often feel the difference.

3. Check the fabric against your market

A fabric that works well in one market may not be ideal in another.

For example, customers in a colder climate may appreciate a softer and warmer blanket.

Customers in warmer climates may prefer a lighter-feeling and more breathable option.

This is also important for online retailers.

Customers cannot touch the product before buying.

The description, photographs and actual product experience need to match.

If the product is described as breathable but feels very warm, you may receive disappointing reviews.

That is not only a product issue.
It becomes a brand issue.

4. Do not skip the sample stage

I know buyers are often under pressure to move quickly.

You have a launch date.
You have a purchasing schedule.
You want to get the product online.

But skipping the sample stage can create bigger problems later.

A sample allows you to check:
Does it feel right?
Is the weight evenly distributed?
Is the fabric suitable?
Does the size work?
Is the packaging practical?
Does the finished product look like the product you want to sell?

If something needs to change, it is much easier to change it before mass production.

5. Think about packaging early

Weighted blankets are different from many ordinary textile products because the product is relatively heavy.

Packaging therefore deserves some attention.

The package needs to protect the product, but it also needs to be practical for storage, transport and retail.

For online sellers, packaging size can also influence shipping cost.

A supplier who understands compression or suitable folding and packing methods may be able to help you make the product more efficient to ship.

But packaging should never be developed only around making the carton as small as possible.

The product still needs to arrive in good condition.

6. Ask how quality is checked

“Good quality” is too general.

A better conversation is about what is actually checked.
For example:
  • Fabric appearance
  • Stitching
  • Dimensions
  • Weight
  • Filling distribution
  • Packaging
  • Labelling
The exact inspection process will depend on the supplier and product specification.

The important thing is to have clear expectations before production starts.

Otherwise, the buyer and supplier may have completely different ideas about what “acceptable quality” means.

7. Think beyond the first order

A good supplier relationship is not only about getting one shipment at the lowest possible price.

If your weighted blanket becomes a regular product, consistency becomes very important.

You want the second order to feel like the first order.

You want the colour, fabric, dimensions and construction to remain stable.

And if you later add another size or weight, you want the supplier to understand the product instead of starting from zero.

This is why I believe sourcing should be viewed as a product development process, not simply a price comparison exercise.

The cheapest quote is not always the cheapest product

A lower FOB price can look attractive at the beginning.

But if the product creates high return rates, poor reviews, rework, inconsistent quality or packaging problems, the real cost can be much higher.

For brands, importers, wholesalers and retailers, the better goal is not simply:
“Find the cheapest weighted blanket.”
It is:
“Find a product and supplier combination that makes commercial sense.”
