Why Memory Foam Pillow Prices Vary So Much

If you are sourcing memory foam pillows, you may have experienced this:

You send a supplier a product photo and ask:
“Can you make this pillow? How much?”

It looks like a simple question.

But for a factory, a photo is usually not enough to give a meaningful final price.
Two memory foam pillows can look almost the same in a photo, but the actual cost can be quite different.

Here are some of the main reasons.

1. The foam is not always the same

The foam itself has a big influence on the product.

Different foam types, densities and rebound characteristics can change the cost and also the feeling of the pillow.

For example, two pillows may have the same size and shape, but one may use a different foam density or formula.

From a product photo, you cannot see this difference.

For a private label project, it is better to discuss the required firmness, rebound, density and overall feel before fixing the price.

2. The cover can change the price

The cover is another detail that is easy to overlook.

A pillow in a photo may look like it has a simple white cover, but the actual fabric could be polyester, cotton, bamboo-blend, Tencel-blend or another knitted fabric.

The construction of the cover can also be different.

For example, knitted fabric usually has more stretch than woven fabric. Depending on the pillow design and the function you want, one may be more suitable than the other.

So even when the pillow looks almost identical, the cover specification may be different.

3. Size and height matter

“50 × 30 cm” is not the whole specification.

The height of the pillow also matters, especially for ergonomic or contoured designs.

A pillow with the same length and width can have a very different foam volume if the height or shape changes.

For this reason, we normally need the complete dimensions before confirming a production price.

4. Packaging is part of the cost

Packaging is another point that is often decided too late.

Will the pillow be roll-packed?

Vacuum compressed?

Packed in an individual bag?

Will there be a printed box, a non-woven bag or another type of packaging?

These choices can affect both packaging cost and carton loading.

For a full container order, packaging is especially important because the final carton size affects how many pieces can be loaded.

5. Custom details also add up

Logo, label, embroidery, special fabric, customized shape and other details may look small individually.

But when they are added together, they can make a noticeable difference to the final quotation.

This is why a supplier may ask several questions before giving a firm price.

It is not necessarily making the quotation process complicated.

The goal is to make sure the price is based on the product you actually want to buy.

A better way to request a quotation

If you are developing a memory foam pillow, a product photo is still very useful.

It helps the factory understand the general design.

But for a more accurate quotation, it is better to provide as much information as possible:
  • Pillow size and height
  • Foam type or required feel
  • Cover fabric
  • Logo and labeling
  • Packaging requirements
  • Order quantity
  • Compression or packing method
  • Target market, if there are specific requirements
If some details are not decided yet, that is also fine.

We can start with the information you have and work through the missing details step by step.

A good quotation should be based on the product you actually want to develop — not only the picture you found online.

If you have a memory foam pillow photo and want to develop something similar for your brand, send us the photo and your current specifications. We can help you check what information is still needed and work from there.
