Can You Estimate Foam Density From Pillow Weight?

Sometimes a customer does not know the foam density of the memory foam pillow they are currently selling.

That is quite common.

They may know the pillow size and weight, but they may not have the original foam specification from their supplier.

For example:
Size: 60 × 40 × 10 cm Total weight: 1.2 kg

Can we use this information to estimate the foam density?
Yes, but only approximately.

It can be a useful starting point when developing a similar pillow, but it should not be treated as the actual foam density of the product.

Density Is Based on Weight and Volume

Foam density describes how much the foam weighs within a certain volume. In simple terms, it is calculated from mass and volume.

For a simple rectangular foam block, the basic idea is:
Density = Foam Weight ÷ Foam Volume

But a finished pillow is usually more complicated.

The total weight of a pillow may include:
  • Memory foam core
  • Pillow cover
  • Zipper
  • Mesh or other fabric parts
  • Gel layer or other inserts
  • Other small components
So if you weigh the complete pillow, you are not measuring the foam alone.

The pillow shape can also make the calculation less straightforward. A contour pillow, for example, may have different heights and curves instead of one simple rectangular shape.

This is why we use the word “estimate” rather than saying we can know the exact density from the finished pillow weight.

Why Is This Information Still Useful?

Even with these limitations, the existing product's size and weight can tell us quite a lot.

Imagine a customer wants to develop a similar pillow but does not know the foam specification.

Instead of starting from nothing, they can provide:
Current pillow size Current pillow weight Photos Pillow height Cover information, if available

This gives us a better starting point for understanding the existing product.

It can also help us discuss whether the new pillow should be similar in weight, feel and overall positioning.

For example, if the customer wants a new pillow that feels close to an existing product, knowing only the size is not enough.

The weight gives us another useful reference.

But Weight Does Not Tell You Everything

It is important not to use weight as a shortcut for product quality.

Two pillows with the same weight can still use different foam formulations and have different firmness, rebound and overall feel.

Density itself is also not the same thing as firmness. A higher-density foam does not automatically mean a firmer pillow. These are different characteristics of the foam.

The pillow's shape, foam type, cover tension and construction can also affect the final feel.

So if you are trying to reproduce an existing pillow, weight is only one piece of the information.

What Should You Send ?

If you are developing a pillow similar to a product you already sell, you do not need to know every technical specification before contacting a supplier.

Start with the information you have.

A useful starting package can be:
  • Product photos
  • Length and width
  • Pillow height
  • Total product weight
  • Cover fabric, if known
  • Any information about the existing foam
  • Target quantity
If the product is important to your business, sending a physical sample can provide even more useful information for product analysis and development.

The goal is not to guess the exact density from a number.

The goal is to understand the existing product better before developing the new one.

If you have an existing memory foam pillow but do not know the foam specification, send us the size, weight and photos. We can help you review the available information and discuss what needs to be confirmed before making a similar product.
