Choosing Minky and Microfiber Fabrics for Winter Weighted Blankets

What Fabric Weight Works for a Winter Weighted Blanket?

When developing a weighted blanket for winter, one question often comes up: what fabric weight should we choose?

If you are considering a Minky and microfiber combination, there is no need to start with an unusually heavy fabric. It is better to look at the feel of each material and how the two fabrics work together.

For our regular production, we commonly use 200gsm Minky with a pile height of around 1.5mm, combined with 90gsm microfiber. These are practical starting points for a custom weighted blanket, rather than fixed requirements for every design.

The final choice depends on the feel you want, the blanket construction and your target market.

Why Choose Minky for Winter?

Minky is a plush fabric with a soft, velvety surface. It is a good option when you want a weighted blanket to feel cosy and warm during colder months.

For this type of project, we commonly recommend Minky at around 200gsm with a pile height of 1.5mm. This gives the blanket a soft surface without using an excessively long pile.

Fabric weight and pile height describe different things. GSM tells you the fabric's weight per square metre, while pile height describes the length of the raised surface fibres. Both are worth checking when comparing Minky samples.

If you are developing a winter product, I would recommend reviewing the actual fabric sample before confirming the specification. The numbers are useful, but the finished feel matters too.

Why Use 90gsm Microfiber on the Other Side?

Microfiber offers a different surface feel from plush Minky. In our regular production, 90gsm microfiber is a common option for the other side of this type of blanket.

Using two different fabrics gives the product a different look and feel on each side without making both sides equally plush.

The right combination depends on your design. If you want a blanket with a soft Minky surface and a simpler reverse side, this is a practical option to consider.

For custom projects, we can discuss the fabric combination based on your preferred feel, colour and product requirements.

What About a Minky and Bamboo Combination?

Another option is to use Minky on the front and bamboo-based fabric on the reverse.

This combination can be attractive for brands that want two different fabric surfaces in one blanket. The Minky side offers a plush feel, while the bamboo-based side provides a different touch and appearance.

It is worth considering if you want to offer more than one fabric style within your weighted blanket range.

The actual fabric specification should be confirmed for each design, as bamboo-based fabrics are available in different constructions and weights.

Colour Options and Flexible MOQ

Fabric choice is only part of product development. Colour also matters, especially if you are creating a blanket for your own brand.

We have multiple colour options available for Minky and microfiber fabrics. If you choose from existing colours rather than developing a new colour, we can support smaller custom orders, generally around 100–200 pieces depending on the fabric and order requirements.

This can be a useful way to test a new product without committing to a large quantity at the beginning.

If you already have a preferred colour, you can share a reference image or select from available colour options before sample development.

Which Combination Should You Choose?

For a winter weighted blanket, 200gsm Minky with a 1.5mm pile height and 90gsm microfiber is a practical starting point based on our regular production experience.

If you want a different look and feel, a Minky and bamboo-based fabric combination is also worth discussing.

Before confirming an order, it is best to review the actual fabrics, colour availability, finished construction and packaging requirements together.
