5-Layer vs. 7-Layer Weighted Blankets: When Is Extra Lining Needed?

Why Do Weighted Blankets Have Different Layer Structures?

When developing a weighted blanket, the number of layers is not just a technical detail. It affects material cost and how the blanket is constructed for use.

A standard 5-layer construction is a common, cost-effective option. A 7-layer construction adds two extra lining layers to help reduce the risk of glass beads escaping through the outer fabric during use.

So, is a 7-layer blanket always better than a 5-layer one? Not necessarily. It depends on the fabric, the customer's requirements and the market the product is designed for.

What Is a Standard 5-Layer Weighted Blanket?

A typical 5-layer weighted blanket uses the following structure:
  • Outer fabric on the top
  • Polyester padding
  • Glass bead filling
  • Polyester padding
  • Outer fabric on the bottom

This construction is practical and economical for many products. It can be a suitable choice when the selected outer fabric provides enough support for the filling and meets the customer's requirements.

For buyers who need to control product cost, a 5-layer construction is worth considering first. However, the outer fabric should always be evaluated before the structure is confirmed.

When Should You Add Two Extra Lining Layers?

Some fabrics may need extra support between the outer fabric and the filling structure. In these cases, adding lining can help reduce the risk of glass beads working their way through the fabric during repeated use.

For example, when the outer fabric is 60-count bamboo fabric, we recommend considering extra lining. The fabric specification and construction need to be checked carefully before production, rather than assuming the outer fabric alone will be suitable.

Lambswool-style fleece is another fabric where we recommend adding lining. Its surface texture may look thick and soft, but surface thickness alone does not tell you whether the fabric is suitable for containing small glass beads.

For these fabric choices, a 7-layer construction adds two lining layers, one on each side. The extra layers add material and production cost, but they can provide an additional barrier between the filling and the outer fabric.

The final structure should still be confirmed according to the actual fabric and sample.

What If the Blanket Uses Two Different Fabrics?

Some customers prefer a weighted blanket with lambswool-style fleece on one side and crystal velvet on the other.

In this case, adding lining to both sides may not be necessary. We may recommend adding lining only on the fleece side, while keeping the crystal velvet side without an extra lining layer.

This gives a total of 6 layers.

For the fleece side, we recommend considering a lining of 65 GSM or above. The suitable specification should be checked with the selected materials and finished sample.

This is a good example of why the layer structure should not be decided by a fixed rule. If the two sides use different fabrics, they may need different treatment.

Does Every Polyester Fabric Need Extra Lining?

Not always, but customer requirements matter.

Some buyers choose brushed polyester fabric for the outer layer and still request extra lining. This may be part of their product specification or the construction they prefer for their target market.

We do not assume that all polyester fabrics need the same structure. Instead, we look at the selected fabric, the required layer construction and the customer's expectations before confirming the sample.

For OEM and private label projects, it is better to discuss these details early. Changing the layer structure after sample approval may affect material use, cost and production arrangements.

Discuss Your Weighted Blanket Construction

If you are developing a new weighted blanket, you do not need to decide the layer structure based on the layer count alone.

Tell us which outer fabrics you plan to use, whether both sides use the same material, and if you have a required layer structure. We can review the options with you and discuss a suitable construction for your product and target market.
