How to Choose Inner Lining for Weighted Blankets
Learn when weighted blankets need extra inner lining based on fabric choice, from 60-count cotton and brushed polyester to crystal velvet and lambswool-style fleece.

Does Every Weighted Blanket Need Extra Lining?
When developing a weighted blanket, the outer fabric is not only about how the product looks and feels. It also affects how we plan the inner construction around the glass bead filling.
One question we discuss with customers is whether an extra lining layer is needed. There is no single answer for every fabric. Some materials can work well with a standard construction, while others are worth adding a lining layer to.
The decision also depends on the customer's specification and target market. Here is how we usually approach several common fabric choices.
60-Count Cotton: A Standard 5-Layer Construction
For weighted blankets using 60-count cotton fabric on both sides, we generally use a standard 5-layer construction:
- Outer cotton fabric
- Polyester padding
- Glass beads
- Polyester padding
- Outer cotton fabric
With this fabric choice, we normally do not add extra lining. This helps keep the construction and production cost under control.
However, the fabric specification and the complete construction still need to be confirmed for each project. A particular design or customer requirement may call for a different solution.

Brushed Polyester: An Economical Option
Brushed polyester is another practical option for weighted blankets, especially when the buyer needs to work within a specific price range.
In our regular production experience, this fabric usually does not require an extra lining layer. But some customers still ask us to add one.
That is fine. We can discuss the required construction according to the customer's product specification.
For private-label projects, the goal is not to use the same construction for every order. It is to confirm the right materials and structure before sampling, so the product matches the buyer's requirements and target price.

Crystal Velvet (Minky) and Lambswool-Style Fleece: Why We Recommend Lining
For crystal velvet and lambswool-style fleece, we generally recommend adding an inner lining.
The reason is practical. The glass beads need to remain contained inside the quilted compartments throughout normal use. Depending on the fabric and construction, adding a lining provides another layer between the filling and the outer fabric, helping reduce the risk of beads escaping.
It adds some material and production cost, but this may be worth considering when developing the product for retail. If a customer reports beads leaking from a finished blanket, the issue can mean extra communication, returns or other after-sales work.
Adding lining does not guarantee that leakage can never happen. Stitching quality, fabric properties and the overall construction still matter. But choosing a suitable lining from the beginning is one step that can help reduce the risk.

Can You Choose the Lining GSM?
Yes. If you have a specific lining weight in mind, you can tell us when discussing the product.
GSM refers to the fabric's weight in grams per square metre. Different lining specifications can affect material use, cost and the finished construction.
Rather than choosing a lining based on GSM alone, we recommend considering it together with the outer fabric and the complete sample. This helps make sure the materials work together as intended.
If your product has a specific technical specification, please share it before sampling so we can review the requirements with you.
Discuss Your Weighted Blanket Fabric and Construction
The right lining choice depends on the outer fabric, the required construction and your product positioning. A more economical fabric may work with a standard structure, while a plush fabric may be worth developing with extra lining.
If you are planning a custom weighted blanket, tell us your outer fabric, target weight, size and any lining requirements. We can discuss the construction and quote according to your actual specifications.
