How Do Manufacturers Check Weight Distribution in Weighted Blankets?

Why Checking Total Weight Is Not Enough

When a weighted blanket is ready for inspection, checking its total weight is an obvious first step. But it does not tell the whole story.

A blanket may meet the agreed finished weight while some pockets contain more filling than others. The total can be correct, but the filling may not be distributed as intended.

For brands, importers and wholesalers, this is worth checking before approving a sample or accepting bulk production. Weight distribution is not judged by one number alone. It also depends on how the filling is added, how the pockets are made and how the finished blanket is inspected.

Start With the Agreed Product Specification

Before production starts, the key specifications should be clear. These normally include the blanket's finished dimensions, target weight, outer fabric, filling material, quilting pattern and pocket size.

These details work together. For example, changing the blanket dimensions or pocket layout may change the number of pockets and the amount of filling assigned to each one.

Without an agreed specification, it is difficult to decide whether a finished product meets the requirement. For OEM/ODM projects, confirming these details before sampling gives both sides a clear reference for later inspection.

Check How the Filling Is Controlled

During production, the filling amount needs to be controlled according to the agreed construction.

For a glass bead weighted blanket, the total filling quantity is planned as part of the product specification. It is then divided among the pockets according to the approved design.

If the amount added to individual pockets varies too much, some areas may feel different from others even when the overall weight is close to the target.

The specific filling-control method depends on the factory's production process and equipment. Buyers should therefore ask how the filling quantity is controlled and what checks are made during production, rather than assuming every factory follows the same procedure.

Inspect the Pockets and Stitching

The pocket structure helps keep the glass beads within defined sections. During inspection, it is important to check whether the pockets are formed correctly and whether the stitching follows the approved sample.

Look for visible seam openings, inconsistent stitching or other workmanship problems that could allow beads to escape or move between pockets.
It is also useful to look across the blanket instead of checking only one small area. If some pockets appear noticeably fuller or flatter than others, the product may need further review.

However, appearance alone cannot confirm the exact filling quantity in each pocket. If a project has specific requirements for pocket filling, these should be agreed and checked using a suitable inspection method.

Check the Finished Blanket as a Whole

Once the blanket is complete, inspection should cover more than the filling.

Finished weight: Weigh the blanket and compare the result with the agreed specification. Confirm whether the stated target includes the complete finished product or refers to a different weight definition.

Dimensions: Measure the blanket to make sure its size matches the approved specification. Size and pocket layout are connected, so this check helps confirm that the product follows the intended design.

Filling feel: Gently feel different areas of the blanket and check for obvious differences in fullness. This is a practical screening step, not a precise measurement of the filling in each pocket.

Workmanship: Check the quilting, seams and fabric for visible defects. Any problem that affects pocket integrity should be reviewed before the product is approved.

For bulk orders, inspection should follow the agreed quality requirements and approved sample. A consistent checking process is more useful than relying only on whether the blanket feels acceptable to one person.

What Should Buyers Confirm Before Bulk Production?

Before placing a bulk order, buyers should confirm the target finished weight, dimensions, quilting pattern, pocket size and relevant workmanship requirements.

If weight distribution is particularly important to your product, discuss how it will be checked during sampling and bulk production. You can also ask for the inspection criteria to be included in the product specification.

There is no single visual check that proves every pocket contains exactly the intended amount of filling. The appropriate level of checking depends on the product design and the quality requirements agreed for the project.

Clear expectations before production can help reduce misunderstandings when samples and bulk goods are reviewed.
